A lot of care goes into the creation of Pinot Gris at Curly Flat, the wine was whole bunched pressed with a high proportion of solids from fermentation included when racked to barrel before the wine was aged on yeast lees for 5 months in older oak.
The wine throws a light yellow in the glass with nashi pear, red apple and citrus zest on show; there are some floral jasmine like notes if you look hard.
The winemaking technique is on full show here with a layered and textural wine that shows what can be achieved with a variety that is malleable enough to take on any number of expressions. The wine is initially quite tight with unripe pear that gains more honeyed notes with time along with fig and nectarine fruit. The impact of citrus acidity is well timed and gives length and drive to finish.
A wine that will continue to grow in stature over the shorter term. Due for release in February 2019.
